I have just finished 'The Road Home' by Rose Tremain, i haven't read any of her work before but i will now.
Growing up in the fifties and sixties in Australia all you ever heard was,'The Italians and Greeks are stealing our jobs, when i came to Britian it was ,'The Asian's and Blacks are stealing our jobs, now in 2008 it's the Poles are stealing our job's, ironically the people saying this were always employed.This book is about a man leaving the country of his birth and looking for a better life for himself and his family, i cannot knock anyone for this and usually the jobs they are given are jobs the sitting population would not do.I loved the book,sensitive,funny and intuitive and i will follow her stuff more closely.
